What is social media?
Social media is colloquially understood as a group of online applications created to electronically connect users.  Social media applications are hosted exclusively in cyberspace and are designed to create an online opportunity to share information and provide ‘space’ for conversation.

Social media’s primary benefit is its ability to directly connect individuals.

Why does social media matter?
Accessing information from the Internet is instant. This means the traditional mediums for pushing out information, like newspapers, television, radio are no longer ‘quick enough’ for public consumption. News happens electronically – instantly appearing on line. Stories happen later – using print, visuals and more detailed explanations of ideas.

Copyright is dead. Information is expected to be shared. Nobody owns information anymore. In fact, not sharing information is now perceived as antiquated and suspicious. Sharing information makes users feel connected to your organization. Connected users are more likely to choose your product.

Your competitors are ‘out there’. In 2010, potential clients expect to access information anytime, anywhere which means if you don’t have information posted on social networks; users will simply click through to your competitors. If they can’t find you on their social networks, they can’t choose you. * Facebook is the fourth largest search engine on the Internet.
